APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT EDUCATION APPEAL PANEL MEMBERS

The Local Authority is obliged to advertise and appoint members to the Independent Education Appeal Panel. These panel members will hear appeals from parents in relation to Admissions and Exclusion. Every 3 years the Local Authority must advertise for and appoint new members to the panel. Advertisements were circulated in March 2021 and a number of new members have volunteered their services. This report outlines the role of the panel members and seeks approval from the Lead Member for the approval of the new lay panel members.

Decision type: Non-key

Lead member: Lead Member for Corporate Strategy, Policy and Equalities

Consultees

Representatives from Education Service have been kept up to date with the applications from the public to become Panel Members. It would have been inappropriate for any member of the Admission Authority or Customers and Education Support to have been directly involved in the recruitment process as the panel members, by their nature, must be independent of the Admission Authority.

Officers from the Education service were invited to attend the training day which took place on 29th and 30th April 2021.

A copy of this report was circulated around the required consultees in advance of being put before the Lead Member.

No Equality Impact Assessment Screening has been undertaken. Applications were accepted from all persons who volunteered to join the panel.
